ワードプレスのマルチサイト機能で、サイト作成数を1ユーザー1サイトに制限したい

前提・実現したいこと

　こんにちは。プログラミング初心者のため、問題の解決に先人の皆様の知恵をお借りできないかと投稿させていただきました。
もしお時間をお借りできるようでしたら、お力添えをお願いします。
以下、詳細。

ワードプレスにて、マルチサイトで特権管理者ではないユーザーが登録、作成できるサイト数をｘ個に制限する、というプラグインを導入しました。

これに関して、サイト作成数を設定した数までに制限するという機能はおそらく正常に動作しているように思うのですが、サイト数制限に達したユーザーがサイト作成画面を開くと、サイトの表示が崩れた上で、「サイトに技術的な問題が発生しています。」というエラーメッセージが表示されます。

できればこれを、サイトの表示が崩れないままに、記述したメッセージが表示されるようにしたいと考えています。

試したこと

素人目ながら、サイト数制限に達した場合の処理はこのあたりかなと考えていじってみたのですが、

上記箇所の、return "none";部分をecho "～";に変更してみても、案の定というべきか、記述したメッセージが表示されるという処理にはなりませんでした。

そもそもPHPの記述をミスしたときに表示される、「サイトに技術的な問題が発生しています。」が表示されサイトの表示も崩れている時点で、おそらくどこかにエラーや非推奨関数が使われているなどの問題があるのでしょうが、恥ずかしながら多少調べてみたところでも解決することはできませんでした。

プラグインの不具合ならプラグインの開発者へ

プラグインの開発者ならエラーを画面もしくはログに出力されるようにしましょう

私は開発者ではありませんが、このプラグインが8年も前のもので更新がされておらず、非常にニッチな機能のため代わりが見つからず、また、GPLライセンスであることから書き込みをしました。

だとするとメジャーバージョンが違うのでそのプラグインを参考に
現在のバージョンに合うように作り直してください。

全体像がわからないものを「はい!そこです。」って言える人はいないです。

全体像というのがどこからどこまでを指すのかがよくわかりません。プラグインのコードはこれで全てですし、こういったものがあればアドバイスがしやすい、といったものがあれば教えていただきたいです。
