Mavenでプロジェクトが生成できるようにしたい。　mvn archetype:generateコマンドでエラー

Mavenを勉強中です

使用os:macos

Homebrewでmavenをインストールし、PATHを設定しました。
export M2_HOME=/usr/local/Cellar/maven/3.6.3/libexec
export PATH=$M2_HOME/bin:$PATH

JDKもインストールしPATHを通しました。
export JAVA_HOME=/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk-14.0.1.jdk/Contents/Home
export PATH=$JAVA_HOME/bin:$PATH

mvn archetype:generateコマンドでプロジェクトを作成しようとしましたが、下記のようなエラーでプロジェクトが生成できません。

No plugin found for prefix 'archetype' in the current project and in the plugin groupsを調べた感じ、プロキシの設定が必要かと思い

cp $M2_HOME/conf/settings.xml ~/.m2　でsettings.xmlをコピーし、コピー先で、

プロキシの編集を行いましたがエラーは変わりませんでした。（コピー元でも試しましたが同じでした）

その他の原因があると思うのですが手詰まりのためご教授いただきたいです。
